Understanding the Early Years (UEY) is a national initiative aimed at strengthening the capacity of communities to use quality local research to help them make decisions to enhance children's lives.
The project is community focused involving children, parents, teachers, schools, community agencies, business and government. Quality data on children's readiness for school is collected and presented on a local level.
This information will then be used to address local Community program needs, improve on quality of programming and inspire initiatives to support Early Years Development. |

Comfort: When your child recognizes words on boxes and containers praise her efforts and restate what she has told you (e.g., “You’re right, that’s a box of Tasty Rice!”). Let her know that you are proud of what an excellent reader she is becoming.
Play: Playing I Spy and telling riddles are fun ways to build your child’s memory, thinking and language skills. Games engage him in sharing information that he has learned from experience.
Teach: Using the clues that you provide to notice letters and words in the environment and to name familiar foods and products helps your child to develop her emerging reading skills.
